Smothered Burgers

Serves 4

1 pound extra lean ground beef
3 tablespoons finely chopped onion
3 tablespoons water
salt and pepper -- to taste

MUSHROOMS AND ONIONS AND PEPPERS

1 medium onion -- thinly sliced
1 medium red bell pepper -- cut into strips
1/2 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 tablespoon butter
1 cup mushrooms -- sliced
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix beef, onion, water, salt and pepper. Shape mixture into 4 patties, each about 3/4 inch thick.

Preheat the broiler. Place patties on broiler pan rack. Broil with tops about 3 inches from heat until desired doneness (about 5 to 7 minutes on each side for medium). Prepare Mushrooms and Onions and Peppers, then spoon prepared mixture over the hamburgers.

MUSHROOMS AND ONIONS AND PEPPERS:

In a skillet, cook onion and bell pepper in butter/olive oil mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until tender. Stir in mushrooms, garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste, and Worcestershire sauce; heat until mushrooms are hot and cooked through. Top burgers with this mixture.
